The resignation of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and his expected formal registration with the All Progressives Congress (APC) has placed his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, under intense political scrutiny.
Gwarzo has remained in the NNPP and publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, despite the governor’s decision to leave the party.
Governor Yusuf’s move triggered widespread reactions and political realignments across Kano State. Alongside the governor, 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen resigned from the NNPP and were expected to formally register with the APC.
Most members of the State Executive Council also followed the governor by resigning from the NNPP, while only a few declined to defect with him.
The development raised questions about the future political relationship between the governor and his deputy, as well as the stability of the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano State amid the unfolding political realignments.
