Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called on African nations and the wider international community to support Nigeria’s bid for re-election into Part II of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council.
Speaking during the ongoing 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Keyamo reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ICAO’s principles and global aviation development. He outlined reforms and achievements in the country’s aviation sector, stressing that Nigeria has taken concrete steps to strengthen safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
Keyamo highlighted:
Infrastructure upgrades across airports and air navigation services.
Regulatory reforms and capacity-building initiatives to align with international best practices.
Nigeria’s role in promoting regional cooperation through BAGASOO (Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organisation) and support for BAGAIA (the Regional Accident Investigation Agency).
On climate action, he noted that Nigeria has submitted its State Action Plan on carbon emission reduction and voluntarily participates in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), reflecting the nation’s commitment to greener aviation.
The minister also invited global stakeholders to attend the Nigerian International Airshow, scheduled for December 2–4, 2025 in Abuja, positioning it as a platform to showcase Nigeria’s aviation growth and investment opportunities.
The ICAO Council, comprising 36 member states, is elected by the Assembly every three years. Nigeria, which has served on the Council for decades, is seeking to retain its seat in Part II, reserved for states that make significant contributions to international air transport.
