Instead, the royal couple met privately with Francis just days before his death on April 9.
The visit marks King Charles’ first formal audience with Pope Leo, who has already struck a cordial relationship with the British royal family. The Pope recently sent a special tribute following the death of Katherine, Duchess of Kent, whose funeral mass made history as the first Catholic funeral for a royal family member in modern times.
