The Kogi State Government has reiterated its strong commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector, unveiling comprehensive plans aimed at boosting food production, enhancing rural development, and positioning the state as a key player in Nigeria’s agro economy.
Speaking during a media briefing, government officials emphasized the administration’s resolve to harness the state’s vast agricultural potential, particularly through strategic collaborations and infrastructure upgrades. A flagship initiative titled “Food for Lagos” is already underway. It is designed to establish a reliable food supply chain between Kogi and Lagos states, ensuring mutual economic benefits and food security.
“Kogi is strategically located and agriculturally endowed. Our goal is to become a major food basket for Nigeria, especially urban hubs like Lagos,” a government spokesperson said.
Targeted Crop Development and Strategic Zoning
As part of its modernization agenda, the state government is identifying crop specific zones across the state, allowing for optimized use of land based on comparative advantages. Kogi is already recognized as one of Nigeria’s top cassava producers, with ambitions to scale up yields and processing capacities.
Infrastructure and Climate Resilient Projects
The government is also leveraging multilateral projects like the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) and the Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) to improve rural roads, market access, and climate resilience among farming communities.
These programs aim to:
Upgrade rural transport infrastructure to ease movement of agricultural produce
Improve irrigation systems and land restoration to combat desertification and flooding
Attract private sector investment and empower local farmers through training and subsidies
A Vision for Inclusive Growth
The Kogi State Government affirmed that the agricultural reforms are part of a broader strategy to reduce poverty, create jobs, and ensure food sufficiency. The government pledged to work closely with local farmers, cooperatives, and agribusiness investors to drive sustainable growth across the sector.
“This is not just about farming. It’s about transforming rural economies and creating lasting opportunities for our people,” the spokesperson concluded.
