Kwara Orders Immediate Closure of Schools in Four LGAs Over Rising Insecurity

Share

The Kwara State Government has directed the immediate shutdown of schools across four local government areas following escalating security threats in affected communities. The directive, issued on Wednesday, affects Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti LGAs, marking one of the state’s most sweeping precautionary measures in recent months as concerns grow over safety in Kwara South. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State Wing, confirmed the development in a circular released the same day.

Jocomms Correspondent reports that the NUT Chairman, Yusuf Agboola, said the union acted strictly based on instructions from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development after intelligence pointed to fresh security risks. The directive calls for all schools in the listed LGAs to suspend academic activities until further notice. The circular, addressed to local NUT chairmen, stressed the urgency of compliance to safeguard students, teachers, and school property amid the heightened alert.

Parents and educators have expressed mixed feelings, with some praising the government’s proactive stance and others worried about the impact of prolonged closures on learning. As authorities work to restore confidence and enhance security surveillance in the region, a critical question arises—how long before schools can safely reopen for thousands of affected learners?
