Lafarge Africa Plc has introduced EcoCrete, a ready-mix concrete designed to cut carbon emissions in Nigeria’s construction industry. The product, unveiled this week, is the country’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete.

According to the company, EcoCrete delivers at least a 20 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional CEM I concrete, without compromising on strength, performance or reliability.

Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa, said the launch demonstrates the company’s drive to expand its portfolio of sustainable construction solutions. “The introduction of EcoCrete is another bold step in our mission to enable builders and our customers to make smart choices and support Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy,” he said.

Derek Williamson, Head of Aggregates and Readymix at Lafarge Africa, said the product is engineered to perform across multiple applications, including residential housing, commercial buildings, roads and bridges. “EcoCrete provides superior performance while significantly reducing carbon emissions in the environment. It is versatile and reliable for a wide range of applications from residential housing to commercial and infrastructure projects,” he said.

The company noted that the launch builds on the earlier rollout of EcoPlanet Unicem and EcoPlanet Elephant cement products in 2024 and 2025, which were part of Lafarge’s push for sustainable alternatives across its product range.

Emmanuel Ilaboya, Head of Innovation and New Product Development at Lafarge Africa, described EcoCrete as a climate-smart innovation positioned to help address the environmental challenges of the construction sector. “EcoCrete is more than just a product; it is a climate-smart innovation designed to address the urgent need for sustainable construction,” he said.

With EcoCrete, Lafarge Africa aims to strengthen its role in reshaping Nigeria’s construction industry through low-carbon materials, aligning with Holcim’s global commitment to sustainable building practices.
