The Lagos State Government has deployed more than 4,100 officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) across the state as part of a renewed drive to enhance road safety and ensure smoother traffic flow, particularly during the busy ember months.
The deployment was announced during the flag-off of the 2025 Ember Month Safety Campaign, themed “Safe Roads, Safe Lives LASTMA Cares.” The initiative underscores the state’s commitment to improving traffic management through a more humane and efficient approach.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, emphasized that the move reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to ensuring safer roads and minimizing the economic losses caused by gridlock and traffic accidents.
Giwa noted that the efforts of LASTMA personnel contribute significantly to the state’s economy, saving an estimated ₦430 billion annually in man-hour losses and preventing around ₦85 million in potential economic damages each year through effective congestion management.
He explained that during this period, LASTMA would intensify its operations with 24-hour patrols on major highways and inner-city roads. A Night Rapid Response Gang has also been inaugurated to swiftly address vehicle breakdowns, road crashes, and obstructions during late hours.
The campaign’s key targets include achieving zero accidents, zero fatalities, and zero excuses throughout the festive season and beyond.
Giwa urged motorists and commuters to cooperate with traffic officers, obey road regulations, and maintain patience while driving, adding that road safety remains a shared responsibility between government and citizens.
