The Lagos State Government has impounded more than ten heavy-duty trucks for flouting the restriction order banning vehicles weighing over nine tonnes from plying the Third Mainland Bridge.
The enforcement, carried out by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) over the weekend, marks a significant step in the state’s effort to protect key infrastructure and ensure public safety. According to authorities, the action followed months of intensive public sensitisation, stakeholder engagement, and visible signage warning of the restriction.
Speaking on the operation, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, stated that the state had given ample notice before the commencement of full enforcement.
“The period of indulgence is over. We will no longer tolerate any disregard for traffic regulations, especially those put in place to safeguard the lives of Lagosians and preserve our infrastructure,” Giwa said.
He added that the trucks were impounded using newly installed high-definition surveillance and traffic cameras capable of detecting violations in real-time. These technologies are part of a broader smart traffic management initiative across the state.
The nine-tonne weight restriction on the Third Mainland Bridge is a safety measure instituted to reduce stress on the structure and avoid long-term damage, particularly following the bridge’s recent rehabilitation. The bridge, which connects Lagos Island to the mainland, is one of the busiest in Africa, making structural integrity and traffic management critical.
Giwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing the restriction without compromise and warned that defaulters would face immediate impoundment and legal sanctions.
