Lagos Orders Courier Riders to Wear Reflective Jackets for Night Deliveries

The Lagos State Government has announced a new directive mandating all courier and dispatch riders operating at night to wear reflective jackets, as part of efforts to enhance road safety and reduce accidents.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the policy requires riders conducting deliveries between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. to not only wear reflective jackets but also ensure that their motorcycles or bicycles are fitted with reflective tapes for better visibility.

The directive, conveyed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Olawale Musa, through the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport Education and Innovation, Mr. Oluwatobi Idowu, will be enforced by agencies including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS).

Delivery companies have also been tasked with sensitising their riders and ensuring compliance. Offenders risk facing penalties if found violating the new regulation.

In support of the government’s move, Glovo Nigeria announced that it will distribute 3,000 reflective vests free of charge to its couriers within the next month. The company also urged other delivery service providers to follow suit in prioritising rider and public safety.

The state government said the initiative aligns with its broader commitment to improving transportation safety and protecting the lives of riders and commuters, particularly during late hours when visibility is poor.
