The Lagos State Government has announced a 50 percent reduction in fares on the Blue Line rail service to mark the second anniversary of the metro system’s operations.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu revealed the decision during a commemorative event on Wednesday, noting that the move is both a celebration of the milestone and an invitation for more residents to embrace the service.
Since its launch on September 4, 2023, the Blue Line has recorded over five million passenger trips without any major incidents. Officials say the service has transformed daily commuting in Africa’s largest city, providing a safer and faster alternative to road transport.
“Two years on, the Blue Line has become an integral part of Lagos’ urban mobility network. By slashing fares, we are not only celebrating our success but also encouraging more Lagosians to experience the benefits of modern rail travel,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The Blue Line currently runs trains every 10 minutes, completing more than 90 trips each day, significantly cutting travel times for thousands of commuters along its corridor.
The fare reduction takes effect from Thursday, September 4, 2025, and will apply across all Blue Line stations.
Analysts see the move as a strategic step to boost ridership further and consolidate public trust in Lagos’ ongoing investments in rail and urban transport infrastructure.
