Liverpool snapped their four-match losing run in emphatic style with a 5–1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, with former Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike among the scorers.
Facing the prospect of their worst losing streak in 73 years, manager Arne Slot made a bold call by benching an out-of-form Mohamed Salah. But Liverpool’s night started poorly as Rasmus Kristensen finished off a counter-attack to give Frankfurt the lead — the fifth straight match in which the Reds conceded first.
Liverpool responded swiftly. Ekitike, on his return to his former club, equalised after latching onto an Andy Robertson long pass and calmly slotting home before apologising to the home fans. Moments later, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté scored back-to-back headers from corners to give Liverpool a 3–1 half-time lead.
In the second half, Florian Wirtz — without a goal or assist for Liverpool since his big-money move — stepped up on German soil, providing assists for Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai to seal the win.
Despite Wirtz’s breakthrough performance, Alexander Isak’s struggles continued, as he was substituted at half-time for Federico Chiesa.
The result will lift Liverpool’s confidence, but tougher tests lie ahead. Frankfurt, meanwhile, have now shipped 23 goals in their last six matches.
