Los Angeles has declared a state of emergency after a wildfire quickly expanded from 10 acres to over 2,900 acres within hours. Fire chief Kristin Crowley confirmed that more than 30,000 people are under evacuation orders, and over 13,000 buildings are at risk.
Footage from the Pacific Palisades area shows homes engulfed in flames and residents abandoning their vehicles to escape. The fire, which began around 10:30 AM local time on Tuesday, grew rapidly, driven by 50 mph (80 km/h) winds and extremely dry conditions.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone warned that the Pacific Palisades remains “not out of danger,” as a second brush fire began spreading above Altadena near Eaton Canyon, about 26 miles inland.
The entire region is under a red flag warning, signaling extreme fire danger for millions of Californians.
