In an exclusive interview with Daily Trust, Abubakar Malami, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Attorney-General of the Federation, reassured the opposition coalition of its readiness to face any sabotage, internal disputes, or individual ambitions that may arise as it gears up for the 2027 general elections.

The coalition, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, aims to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and mount a serious bid to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to Malami, the newly formed political alliance is determined to overcome any potential hurdles.

“Political coalitions are susceptible to infiltration, crisis, and the ambitions of individual members, but we are resolved to manage these challenges,” Malami asserted. “We are working diligently to ensure that we overcome any obstacle that comes our way.”

Malami, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, acknowledged that political engagements, particularly those in coalitions, are fraught with risks. These include the threat of betrayal and sabotage, which often come from within. He emphasized that while such threats cannot be entirely avoided, the coalition is committed to remaining steadfast and moving forward with purpose.

“You cannot rule out the possibility of a crisis, infiltration, or other negative factors,” Malami remarked. “But, the most critical issue is our determination to persist and to overcome these challenges as they arise.”

When questioned about the potential impact of personal ambitions on the coalition’s unity, Malami did not shy away from acknowledging the reality of ambition in politics. He emphasized the importance of managing these ambitions effectively to avoid internal conflicts.

“Ambitions are natural in politics,” Malami explained. “The key is to manage them and ensure internal discipline. We are fully committed to doing so.”

As the countdown to the 2027 elections intensifies, the opposition coalition faces the dual challenge of fending off the ruling party while managing its internal dynamics. Malami’s reassurances come at a time when political tensions are rising, with the APC’s hold on power under scrutiny and the opposition looking to consolidate its position ahead of the crucial poll.
