The Office of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has raised concerns over what it described as coordinated raids by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on his offices and private residences in Abuja and Kebbi State.
In a press statement signed by Mohammed Bello Doka, Special Assistant on Media to Malami, the office alleged that the raids occurred shortly after a public statement referenced Chapter 9 of the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry Report. According to the statement, EFCC operatives allegedly targeted documents related to the chapter without prior notice or explanation.
The statement described the alleged actions as “deeply alarming,” suggesting they amounted to intimidation and retaliation following calls for the EFCC Chairman to recuse himself over alleged bias connected to the Salami Report. Chapter 9 of the report reportedly contains findings implicating senior EFCC officials, including the current Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, who previously served as secretary to the panel.
Malami’s office warned that any harm to its personnel or to Abubakar Malami would be held against what it described as a troubling pattern of conduct, urging Nigerians and the international community to closely scrutinize the timing and justification of the alleged raids.
The statement further called on the media, civil society organisations, professional bodies, and human rights groups to demand the full public release of the Salami Report in the interest of transparency and accountability.
The development comes amid an ongoing EFCC investigation into Malami over allegations including abuse of office, money laundering, and matters linked to Abacha loot recoveries. Malami has previously denied the allegations, describing the probe as politically motivated and compromised by conflict of interest.
