Manchester United have confirmed they will activate a one-year extension to Harry Maguire’s contract, despite the defender’s previous challenges under former manager Erik ten Hag.
Maguire, 31, has made seven appearances under current manager Ruben Amorim, who has given the England international the chance to prove himself. The central defender also wore the captain’s armband in Manchester United’s match against Newcastle, a role he has held since 2023.
“We are going to trigger the option for Harry Maguire,” Amorim said in a statement ahead of United’s upcoming clash with Liverpool at Anfield. “I spoke to him this morning and told him he needs to improve on the pitch. We really need him.”
Amorim also acknowledged the team’s need for leadership, explaining that while Maguire fits the bill, he must step up both as a player and a leader.
“We are desperate for leaders on the pitch. Harry is a leader, but he needs to improve that aspect and his overall performance. Despite the challenges he’s faced, we need him, so we are happy to trigger the extension.”
