Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes was arrested and taken into custody after being accused of stealing a mobile phone, according to reports.
The incident reportedly occurred last month at La Riviera nightclub in Madrid. A man allegedly took a photo of Nunes without his consent in the venue’s bathroom around 5:30 AM on September 8.
Nunes is accused of responding by grabbing the phone from the 58-year-old man and refusing to return it. When national police were called to the scene, they discovered that Nunes had someone else’s phone in his possession, as reported by the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.
He was handcuffed and taken to Arganzuela police station, where he called his lawyer and was released on bail a few hours later, pending trial.
The 26-year-old was in Madrid during the international break after being left out of the Portugal squad by manager Roberto Martinez.
Less than a week after the alleged incident, Nunes returned to action as a second-half substitute against Brentford on September 14. He has also played in a Carabao Cup victory over Watford and a Champions League match against Slovan Bratislava in the weeks since his return to the UK.
Since his £53 million move from Wolves last year, Nunes has struggled to secure a regular starting position in the team.
