Manchester United has named Ruben Amorim as their new head coach following the departure of Erik ten Hag. The announcement comes after Sporting CP, Amorim’s previous club, confirmed that United had approached them regarding the highly-regarded Portuguese manager.
Amorim, who signed a contract until June 2027 with an option for an additional year, is set to join United officially on Monday, November 11, during the international break. For now, club legend and former assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue as interim manager, having led United to a decisive 5-2 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City, securing a quarter-final spot against Tottenham.
At 39, Amorim has gained a reputation as one of football’s most promising young coaches. He led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and repeated the feat last season. Under his leadership, Sporting has won all nine league games so far this term, placing them at the top of the Portuguese league.
Amorim’s move to Old Trafford marks his return to a club where he previously trained under Jose Mourinho during an internship. His appointment follows United’s poor start to the season under Ten Hag, which saw the team languish in 14th place in the Premier League.
With his dynamic approach and successful track record, United fans hope Amorim can restore the club’s form. His tenure will begin after United’s clash with Chelsea on Sunday, with expectations high for a turnaround in their season.
