Manchester United has officially parted ways with Erik ten Hag as manager of the men’s first team, the club announced in a statement on Monday. Ten Hag’s tenure comes to an end after 18 months in charge, during which he led United to two domestic trophies.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future,” read the club’s statement, acknowledging the Dutch manager’s contributions. Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former United player and club legend, will step in as interim head coach, working with the existing coaching staff while the club searches for a permanent successor.

Ten Hag joined Manchester United in April 2022, following a successful stint with Ajax. His time at Old Trafford included a Carabao Cup victory in 2023 and an FA Cup win in 2024, marking a positive turn in United’s domestic record. However, recent performances and internal dynamics have been rumored to contribute to the club’s decision to move in a new direction.

The appointment of van Nistelrooy as interim head coach has been welcomed by fans, who remember his prolific goal-scoring run at the club in the early 2000s. Van Nistelrooy, who previously managed Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, will look to stabilize the team as United evaluates candidates for the full-time role.

Manchester United has yet to confirm a timeline for appointing ten Hag’s permanent replacement.
