Manhunt Ends in Silence: Brown University Shooting Suspect Found Dead—Did Authorities Miss Any Warning Signs?

The suspect in last weekend’s mass shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others wounded has been found dead, authorities confirmed Thursday. Officials said the man is the same individual responsible for the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor just two days after the Rhode Island campus attack, bringing a grim close to a days-long, multi-state search.

During a news conference, authorities identified the suspect as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old former Brown graduate student who attended the university approximately 25 years ago. Officials said Valente took his own life, and his body was discovered inside a storage unit in New Hampshire following an intensive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the development would bring some relief to the community. “Tonight our Providence neighbors can finally breathe a little easier,” he told reporters. Authorities stated there is no evidence Valente acted with accomplices, outlining his movements before and after the shootings, including deliberate steps taken to evade detection.
