Authorities in Utah say no suspect is currently in custody following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The Utah Department of Public Safety confirmed the attack remains an “active investigation” and that multiple agencies, including the FBI and local law enforcement, are involved in the search for the gunman.
Officials described the incident as a “targeted attack,” with investigators believing the fatal shot was fired from the roof of a university building as Kirk addressed a large outdoor crowd. Earlier confusion arose after Governor Spencer Cox said police were interviewing a “person of interest,” while federal and state officials later confirmed that two people had been detained and subsequently released.
Kirk, 31, founder of Turning Point USA, was struck in the neck during the event and later died of his injuries in hospital. His killing has sent shockwaves across the country, with tributes pouring in from political leaders and supporters, while authorities continue a manhunt for the suspect behind the deadly attack.
