Voters in Mauritius headed to the polls on Sunday to elect a new Parliament, with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth’s ruling party aiming for a second consecutive five-year term in one of Africa’s most stable democracies.

Jugnauth, who leads the center-left Militant Socialist Movement (MSM), faces mounting criticism following a recent wiretapping scandal. Leaked recordings allegedly capturing private conversations involving politicians, businesspeople, activists, and journalists were published online, prompting Jugnauth’s government to temporarily ban social media websites. Though the ban was lifted within days, it drew backlash from opposition leaders and civil rights groups who raised concerns about press freedom and transparency.

Around 1 million registered voters participated in Mauritius’s 12th parliamentary election since the island nation gained independence from Britain in 1968. Jugnauth is being challenged by opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam, whose Alliance for Change coalition is aiming to unseat the incumbent government.

Since winning a parliamentary majority in 2019, Jugnauth’s administration has overseen steady economic progress, benefiting from the island’s robust finance, tourism, and agriculture sectors. Mauritius, located roughly 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) off Africa’s east coast, is celebrated for its tropical beaches and ranks second on the Human Development Index in Africa, trailing only Seychelles. Known for its high standard of living, the nation was briefly classified as a high-income country by the World Bank in 2020, though the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted its tourism industry.

Mauritians are voting for 62 parliamentary seats, with the winning party or coalition forming the government and selecting the prime minister. The country’s Electoral Supervisory Council will also appoint an additional eight members of Parliament.

The election’s outcome will determine whether Jugnauth can solidify his leadership or if a shift in power awaits as Mauritius continues to navigate challenges to its democratic freedoms and economic stability.
