Kylian Mbappé will miss France’s World Cup qualifier against Iceland on Monday, where Les Bleus could secure their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after suffering another knock to his right ankle, the French Football Federation (FFF) has confirmed.
The Real Madrid forward, who has been nursing a “minor ankle issue,” aggravated the injury during Friday’s 3–0 win over Azerbaijan in Paris. Mbappé opened the scoring but was substituted late in the game after taking two heavy challenges.
His absence adds to France’s growing list of unavailable attackers, including Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Marcus Thuram, and Bradley Barcola, all sidelined for the October qualifiers.
“Mbappé will not be able to play on Monday against Iceland,” the FFF said in an official statement.
After returning to Clairefontaine on Friday night, Mbappé spoke with head coach Didier Deschamps, who acknowledged his unavailability. The federation confirmed that the 25-year-old has been released back to Real Madrid and will not be replaced in the squad.
The France captain had already missed several training sessions earlier in the week due to the same ankle problem.
During Friday’s match, Mbappé found the net just before halftime but was later clattered by Rustam Ahmedzade, before taking another hit to the same ankle in the closing stages. He was replaced by Florian Thauvin, who went on to score France’s third goal, with Adrien Rabiot also on target.
“He has a sore ankle and took another knock there,” Deschamps explained after the game. “He preferred to come off — the pain was quite significant.”
France remain unbeaten after three games and top Group D. Les Bleus will seal qualification for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico if they defeat Iceland on Monday and Ukraine fail to beat Azerbaijan.
