A magnitude 3.9 earthquake was recorded in the Lake and Peninsula Borough, approximately 37 miles south of King Salmon, on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 4:39 p.m. UTC (8:39 a.m. local time).
According to preliminary data, the quake occurred at a shallow depth in a remote area of southwestern Alaska, near the boundary between the Bristol Bay and Lake and Peninsula boroughs. No reports of damage or injuries have been received, and no tsunami warnings were issued.
The region, located within Alaska’s seismically active zone, frequently experiences minor to moderate earthquakes due to tectonic movement along the boundary of the Pacific and North American Plates. Events of this size are typically felt only lightly, if at all, by nearby residents.
Officials from the Alaska Earthquake Center and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are continuing to monitor the area for aftershocks or related seismic activity.
Residents are encouraged to report any felt shaking to the “Did You Feel It?” system on the USGS website to assist scientists in refining the event’s impact data.
