The Ministry of Petroleum Resources has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a foundational pillar of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry whose legacy continues to shape the sector.

In an official condolence statement released Monday, following Buhari’s death in London on Sunday, the ministry highlighted his decades-long association with the petroleum sector. Buhari first served as Federal Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources from 1976 to 1978 and later became the pioneer chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The statement, signed by Christopher Ugwuegbulam on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, praised Buhari’s contributions to transparency and reform in the industry. It cited his role as President from 2015 to 2023, during which he oversaw the passage of the long-delayed Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

“From foundational infrastructure to bold sectoral reforms, President Buhari’s legacy in the oil and gas sector is far-reaching,” the ministry said, describing his leadership as a “guiding light” for the industry.

The ministry extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the Nigerian government, and the people, praying for divine comfort and peaceful repose for the former leader.
