The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the circulation of fake Goya vegetable oil sold in plastic (PET) bottles, warning that the product is unsafe for consumption.
The agency clarified that genuine Goya oil is not packaged or sold in plastic bottles in Nigeria. According to NAFDAC, the only authentic Goya oil approved for sale in the country is imported and packaged in original glass bottles by authorised distributors.
Addressing journalists during a media briefing in Lagos, NAFDAC officials revealed that enforcement teams uncovered an illegal production and distribution operation at Oke-Arin Market, Idumota. The counterfeit oil was allegedly produced by mixing burnt palm oil with colouring agents and repackaging it to resemble the original brand.
NAFDAC warned that the consumption of the fake oil poses serious health risks and urged Nigerians to immediately stop buying or using any Goya oil sold in plastic containers.
The agency also cautioned market traders, bulk buyers, and religious organisations against selling or distributing the counterfeit product, stressing that anyone found involved would face prosecution in line with existing regulations.
Members of the public were advised to remain vigilant and report suspected counterfeit or substandard products to the nearest NAFDAC office. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and intensifying efforts to rid Nigerian markets of fake and unregulated food products.
