The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, following a two-day operation on December 16 and 17, 2024.
The Agency revealed the details in a statement posted on its X handle on Wednesday.
During the operation, NAFDAC officials uncovered the large-scale production and distribution of counterfeit and expired goods, including beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items such as noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt.
NAFDAC also reported the destruction of items worth ₦5 billion.
Martins Iluyomade, the Agency’s Director for the South-East Zone, condemned the ongoing illegal activities in the market, which is known for counterfeit and substandard products. He expressed disappointment that, despite an agreement signed by market leaders in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters, the problem persists.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reiterated the Agency’s zero-tolerance policy toward such practices and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health while working towards a lasting solution to the issue of counterfeit goods in the market.
