NAICOM, Others Partner to Boost Road Safety and Curb Fake Motor Insurance

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to enhance road safety and strengthen Nigeria’s motor insurance system.

During a recent meeting between the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dauda Biu, and the NAICOM leadership, both agencies agreed to integrate their data systems to promote transparency, ensure effective enforcement of compulsory third-party motor insurance, and eliminate fake insurance certificates on Nigerian roads.

The collaboration is part of the broader reforms introduced under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025, which expands the scope of compulsory third-party motor insurance and establishes a dedicated compensation fund for road accident victims. The fund, to be managed in collaboration with the FRSC and other stakeholders, will provide timely financial support to accident victims and their families.

NAICOM’s Commissioner for Insurance, Olusegun Omosehin, noted that the partnership would help improve road safety outcomes through better coordination between insurance and emergency response agencies. “We are leveraging technology and inter-agency collaboration to build a more responsive and efficient system that ensures victims of road crashes receive prompt support,” he said.

The NHIA will also play a crucial role in providing health coverage and emergency care for road accident victims, creating a more comprehensive safety net for Nigerians.

Beyond enforcement, the agencies plan to launch a nationwide public awareness campaign to educate motorists on the benefits of genuine motor insurance and safe driving practices. The digital integration between NAICOM and FRSC will also allow instant verification of insurance policies, reducing fraud and streamlining accident response.

With road accidents ranking among Nigeria’s leading causes of death and injury, stakeholders say the new partnership marks a major step toward saving lives, strengthening trust in the insurance industry, and promoting responsible road use. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
