The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commenced nationwide mobilisation of students to protest the implementation of newly introduced tax laws scheduled to take effect today, January 1, 2026.
The student body announced January 14, 2026 as a National Day of Action, warning that students across the country would take to the streets to oppose what it described as controversial tax reforms.
The planned protest comes amid growing public debate over the tax laws, which have been criticised over claims that the versions officially gazetted differ from those approved by the National Assembly.
Despite the objections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday insisted that there was no justification for halting the reform process. He stated that no substantial issues had been identified that would warrant suspending or disrupting the implementation of the new tax regime.
NANS maintains that the reforms could negatively impact students and ordinary Nigerians, and has vowed to sustain pressure until its concerns are addressed.
