The National Assembly is considering a new salary structure for legislative aides attached to senators and members of the House of Representatives, in a bid to improve service delivery and strengthen legislative performance. Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, disclosed this on Tuesday at a three-day capacity-building training for aides in Abuja.
Ogunlana explained that while aides are political appointees, their current conditions of service mirror civil service templates that do not reflect the peculiarities of their roles. He stressed that the absence of a comprehensive law defining their duties has left them vulnerable to arbitrary decisions and uncertain job security.
He proposed that the National Assembly Service Commission and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission develop a distinct salary structure and service conditions tailored to their work. Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission, Saviour Enyiekere, also urged aides to continually upgrade their skills to better contribute to legislative processes.
