The Defence Headquarters has directed the immediate dismantling of all non-essential roadblocks and unauthorised checkpoints across major highways in Nigeria, raising significant discussions on national security and operational efficiency. The order, issued in a memo dated December 5 and signed by Brigadier General A. Rabiu on behalf of the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, follows growing concerns that the proliferation of unapproved checkpoints has hindered movement and created unnecessary risks for both civilians and military personnel.

According to the memo, these unauthorized checkpoints have contributed to operational inefficiencies while exposing security operatives to avoidable dangers in volatile areas. The directive emphasized that military field commanders and theatre components must comply without delay to ensure safer, smoother travel nationwide.

“In view of the foregoing, I am directed to respectfully convey that the services Headquarters hereby instructs all TCS/FCs to ensure the immediate dismantling of the non-essential static roadblocks and unauthorised checkpoints within their respective JOA,” the memo stated.
