The Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, has raised alarm over rising fraudulent practices within the country’s aviation sector and has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to intervene.
Najomo made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, in Abuja. He warned that fraudulent activities in high-value transactions—such as aircraft purchases, leasing arrangements, foreign maintenance contracts, and procurement of safety infrastructure—pose a direct threat to aviation safety, regulatory oversight, and investor confidence.
The NCAA boss lamented that some airlines have consistently failed to remit the mandatory 5% Ticket Sales Charge (TSC) and Cargo Sales Charge (CSC), which are vital sources of internally generated revenue for the Authority. According to him, under-reporting of ticket revenues, manipulation of ticketing systems, and diversion of funds by certain operators have further undermined the NCAA’s ability to effectively regulate the industry.
Najomo also raised concerns over the surge in illegal charter operations disguised as private flights, warning that the unregulated financial flows linked to such activities could enable money laundering and compromise the integrity of the aviation sector.
He stressed that only through collaboration with the EFCC can the NCAA uncover and curb these financial crimes, thereby safeguarding both the industry’s revenue base and public safety.
