The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced new sanctions for flight and crew members, especially pilots, who work for multiple airlines simultaneously. According to the NCAA, this practice endangers aviation safety and violates the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations.
In a letter issued by Acting Director-General of Civil Aviation, Chris Nojomo, and addressed to all airline operators, the NCAA highlighted findings from recent surveillance reports revealing instances of pilots working for more than one airline. Titled ‘Prohibition of Ad-Hoc Flight Operators for Multiple Airlines’ and dated November 6, 2024, the letter outlines the safety risks posed by this conduct.
The NCAA emphasized that pilot training, including simulator proficiency checks, is specific to each airline’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and training program. Any deviation from these standards, particularly pilots operating concurrently for multiple airlines, is deemed a threat to flight safety.
“With effect from the date of issuance of this directive, all operators and holders of pilot licenses are informed that this action will be treated as a violation of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations,” the letter states. Enforcement of the directive will commence on November 11, 2024, with strict penalties for violators.
The NCAA also clarified that future simulator renewals will be filed directly to the specific operator to ensure compliance.
