The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposal to overhaul and modernize training institutions for security agencies across Nigeria. The decision followed a presentation by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who linked improved security infrastructure to the President’s trillion-dollar economy vision. To drive the initiative, NEC set up a committee chaired by Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, with six other governors and former Inspector General of Police, Baba Usman, as secretary, to produce a comprehensive blueprint within one month.

At the 152nd NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa, President Tinubu emphasized the need to create conducive training environments for both trainers and trainees in the security sector. He urged state governments to also prioritize citizens’ welfare at the grassroots level. Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chaired the meeting, charged governors to focus on tangible results that improve lives, stressing that “the measure of government is not in speeches delivered; it is in the lives improved.”

The meeting also reviewed key national updates, including the Anticipatory Action Framework for Riverine Flooding presented by the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, aimed at proactive disaster management. Council discussions covered progress on the polio eradication campaign, the Katsina Sustainable Platform for Agriculture (KASPA), and efforts to curb crude oil theft. The Council reaffirmed commitment to achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2033, sustaining cooperation among all levels of government, and aligning policies with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for national growth and stability.
