The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced the expansion of its student loan programme to include vocational and skills training centres across the country, beginning with a rollout in Enugu State.

According to the agency, the new initiative is designed to support young Nigerians interested in technical and vocational careers by covering training fees, providing upkeep allowances, and offering start-up tools upon completion of their programmes. Transport-related institutional charges will also be included in the loan package.

NELFUND noted that the scheme is already being extended to more than ten states, with Enugu selected as one of the first due to its strong technical and vocational infrastructure. An online portal will soon be opened for applicants to apply and be matched with approved vocational and skills centres within their state of residence.

In addition to the expanded loan scheme, the Fund revealed plans to support over 50,000 apprentices and tradesmen in the informal sector with interest-free loans for training in areas such as ICT device repair, fashion design, welding, and mechanical work. The initiative is part of a broader effort to empower Nigerian youths with practical skills that enhance employability and entrepreneurship.
