In a move that has sparked concern among Nigerian subscribers, Netflix has once again raised its subscription fees for the third time in under a year. This latest increase marks the first hike of 2025, continuing the trend of price adjustments for the streaming giant’s services in Nigeria.
According to updated information available on Netflix’s official website, the price for the Premium plan has risen to ₦8,500 per month, up from ₦7,000. Similarly, the Standard plan has increased from ₦5,500 to ₦6,500. The Basic plan has also seen a price jump, now costing ₦4,000, up from ₦3,500. The Mobile plan, which remains the most affordable option, has risen to ₦2,500, up from ₦2,200.
This increase follows two previous hikes by Netflix in April and July of 2024. The regular adjustments come as part of Netflix’s strategy to align its pricing with the growing economic challenges faced by Nigerians, including inflation and a weakened naira.
The Broader Context: Economic Strain in Nigeria
The recent hike by Netflix follows broader economic trends in Nigeria. The country is grappling with rising living costs, an ever-depreciating naira, and inflation at record highs. Nigerians are not only facing higher costs for entertainment services but also for essential goods and services.
In a related development, Nigerian telecom companies have raised their prices by up to 50% earlier this year. Furthermore, MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, introduced new subscription prices in March 2025. The DStv Compact bouquet saw a 25% increase, with prices rising from ₦15,700 to ₦19,000. Similarly, other packages like DStv Compact Plus and Premium packages saw price hikes, with the latter rising to ₦44,500 from ₦37,000.
For GOtv subscribers, prices for various packages have also gone up. For instance, the Jinja package increased from ₦3,600 to ₦3,900, while the Jolli package rose from ₦4,850 to ₦5,800. GOtv Max and Supa packages have also seen significant price hikes, with the Supa Plus plan now priced at ₦16,800, up from ₦15,700.
Netflix’s Response
Despite the noticeable impact on subscribers, Netflix has yet to issue an official statement regarding the recent price hikes in Nigeria. The continued increases have sparked conversations around the sustainability of subscription-based services in a country facing significant economic challenges.
As Netflix adjusts its pricing strategy, many Nigerians are left wondering about the future of streaming services in the country. With other platforms like MultiChoice following suit with their price hikes, the affordability of entertainment options in Nigeria remains uncertain.
