The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced a new chapter in its leadership with the formal assumption of office by the newly appointed Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN. The handover ceremony, held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, marked a moment of renewed commitment to democratic integrity and institutional excellence.
In her welcome address, the Acting Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, presented the handover notes to Professor Amupitan and described the occasion as “a significant moment in the life of our Commission and indeed our nation’s democratic journey.” She commended the timing of the appointment, coming as the Commission finalises preparations for the Anambra State Governorship Election scheduled for 8th November 2025.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu noted that the new Chairman was assuming office at a crucial time, with heightened expectations from Nigerians. She expressed confidence in the capacity and patriotism of INEC’s staff, assuring Professor Amupitan of a solid foundation built by his predecessors and strengthened by one of the most experienced teams in Nigeria’s public service.
The event featured the introduction of INEC’s directors, described as “generals on the field of electioneering,” who oversee the Commission’s 23 departments. Dignitaries from the University of Jos, Professor Amupitan’s alma mater, also attended, including the Vice-Chancellor and other principal officers. The presence of his wife, Professor Yemisi Amupitan, and their children added a personal touch to the ceremony, as the new Chairman outlined his dual charge to strengthen internal unity and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
