The Niger State Government has announced plans to reopen schools across the state in phases following improved security conditions in some local government areas (LGAs).
The decision comes weeks after public and private schools were shut down due to rising insecurity, including incidents of abductions that affected pupils and teachers. According to the state government, the phased reopening will apply only to schools located in LGAs that have been cleared and certified safe by security agencies.
Authorities said schools in areas still considered high-risk will remain closed until security operations are concluded and safety is guaranteed. The government noted that the safety of students, teachers and school communities remains its top priority.
School administrators have been directed to register students immediately upon resumption and submit enrollment data to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for monitoring. Local government chairmen have also been tasked with supporting security arrangements around school premises.
The state government assured parents and guardians that it will continue to review the security situation and provide updates as more areas become eligible for reopening.
