
The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the State of California, United States of America, have formalised a strategic partnership to promote green development and climate innovation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the ongoing COP30 Conference in Brazil.
The historic agreement was witnessed by key stakeholders, including Governor Gavin Newsom of California, Director-General of the National Climate Change Council (NCCC), Barrister Tenioye Majekodunmi, and California Transportation Secretary, Toks Omishakin.
The MoU aims to strengthen cooperation between Nigeria and California in areas such as clean energy transition, sustainable transportation, climate resilience, and knowledge exchange, while advancing both regions’ shared commitment to low-carbon and inclusive economic growth.
Representatives from Nigeria’s petroleum regulatory agencies and leading private-sector players in renewable energy also participated in the engagement, underscoring a collaborative, multi-sectoral approach to green growth and climate action.
Speaking at the signing, NCCC Director-General Barrister Tenioye Majekodunmi emphasized that the partnership reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed commitment to sustainable development and Nigeria’s active role in global climate leadership.
