The Federal Government has signed a landmark agreement with Shanghai Haiqi Industrial Company of China to commence local production of insulin in Nigeria. The initiative, driven by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and its research agency, the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABRDA), marks a decisive step toward reducing the nation’s dependence on imported insulin.

The partnership is expected to deliver cheaper and more accessible insulin for patients, ensure a stable supply of life-saving medication, and create opportunities for technology transfer and job creation. It will also strengthen Nigeria’s capacity in biotechnology, advancing the country’s long-term health security and industrial growth.

For years, erratic imports and high costs have made diabetes care unaffordable for many Nigerians. Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, this collaboration is positioning Nigeria as a regional hub for biotechnology and healthcare innovation, while providing millions of citizens living with diabetes renewed hope for sustainable and affordable treatment.
