President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India have strengthened the bond between their nations, reaffirming their strategic partnership across multiple sectors during a bilateral meeting. Boosting Defense and Security Cooperation
The two countries committed to strengthening their defense and security collaboration, focusing on counterterrorism efforts such as combating terrorist financing and eliminating safe havens. Joint anti-piracy operations and maritime security enhancements in the Gulf of Guinea and the Indian Ocean were also highlighted. Additionally, India reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s defense modernization efforts, showcasing its capabilities as a trusted defense manufacturer.
Enhanced Economic Ties and Investments
With India as Nigeria’s largest trading partner, the economic relationship between the two nations remains robust. Over 200 Indian companies currently operate in Nigeria, contributing significantly to its economy. Both nations pledged to finalize pending agreements, including the Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA), Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), and Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT), to further boost trade and investment. Investments worth $14 billion pledged by Indian investors during President Tinubu’s 2023 visit to India have already started yielding results.
Advancing Energy Collaboration
The leaders announced long-term agreements for the supply of crude oil and LNG, ensuring energy security for both nations. Additionally, India promised technical support for pipeline transmission security, CNG conversion, and LPG bottling and distribution.
Transforming Healthcare
India pledged its CoWIN digital health platform to enhance Nigeria’s vaccination campaigns and health data management. Other healthcare initiatives include supplying affordable generic pharmaceuticals through India’s PMBJP scheme and establishing hospitals and diagnostic centers in Nigeria to improve healthcare delivery.
Strengthening Food Security and Agriculture
Acknowledging India’s critical concessions on rice supply, Nigeria expressed gratitude while agreeing to collaborate on agricultural development. This includes sharing machinery, high-yield seeds, and expertise in millet production, a vital area of focus during the International Year of Millets in 2023.
Promoting Education and Cultural Exchange
Both nations committed to enhancing educational ties by promoting scholarships and virtual learning programs, such as India’s eVBAB initiative, to benefit Nigerian students. Cultural exchanges will also be strengthened through increased participation in film, literary festivals, and tourism initiatives.
Renewable Energy Collaboration
As members of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the countries agreed to work together on expanding renewable energy portfolios. Plans to establish solar parks and enhance energy infrastructure were also discussed.

The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to UN Security Council reform and enhanced collaboration in West African peace and security initiatives. Nigeria also received invitations to join the Global Biofuel Alliance and the Global Rivers Cities Alliance, signaling its growing role in global sustainability efforts.
