The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a staggering 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, valued at approximately ₦29.4 billion, at the Port and Terminal Multiservices Ltd. (PTML) Command in Lagos. The seizure occurred during a routine inspection of containers designated for export.
Officials revealed that the cocaine was hidden in a 20-foot empty container imported from Freetown, Sierra Leone. The container lacked proper labeling and had no listed consignee, raising immediate suspicion. The terminal operator flagged the shipment on 7 October 2025, noticing unusual packages during standard disinfection procedures for 39 empty containers.
Upon thorough inspection, 50 packages were discovered, each containing 20 parcels that tested positive for cocaine. Customs Controller, Mr. Joe Anani, described the seizure as one of the most “mysterious” in the history of the service due to the unusual way the container arrived at the terminal.
No arrests have been reported, as investigations continue to trace the origins of the shipment and the networks involved. The seized consignment has been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.
Authorities noted that large-scale interceptions like this highlight the sophisticated methods employed by drug trafficking networks, including the use of empty or misdeclared containers to smuggle illicit substances. The NCS emphasized the importance of vigilance, inter-agency cooperation, and robust port security to protect Nigeria from organized crime.
The NCS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders and ports, ensuring that unlawful consignments are detected and prevented from reaching the streets. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
