The Federal Government has declared a state of emergency at Onne Port in Rivers State due to repeated incidents of dangerous cargo, including arms and ammunition, being imported through the facility. This measure comes amid rising national security concerns linked to the port’s handling of illicit goods.
Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi announced the emergency protocols during a press conference on Wednesday. For the next three months, all suspected containers at Onne Port will undergo thorough examinations. The move aims to address security breaches and restore the port’s integrity.
Adeniyi highlighted recent significant seizures by the Nigeria Customs Service’s Area 2 Command, including large quantities of military gear and illicit pharmaceuticals. Key seizures included:
– A 40-foot container with military camouflage boots and rubber footwear, valued at N923 million.
– Containers holding cough syrup with codeine, tramadol, and other controlled substances, totaling a Duty Paid Value of over N31 billion.
The Comptroller-General expressed concerns that the port is increasingly being used to import dangerous and illicit cargo, posing a serious threat to national security. He called for public cooperation in providing intelligence on these criminal activities and assured that the emergency protocols would not disrupt legitimate trade.
The Nigeria Customs Service, in collaboration with other security agencies, is committed to combating smuggling and illegal importation, aiming to ensure a secure environment for lawful business activities.
