Nigeria, EU Strengthen Economic Ties as Finance Minister Edun Meets Ambassador Mignot

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, on Wednesday, held high-level discussions with the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, in Abuja to enhance EU-Nigeria economic cooperation.Ambassador Mignot emphasized the EU’s role as Nigeria’s largest trading partner and a key source of foreign direct investment (FDI). He proposed establishing a formal trade and investment dialogue framework to unlock new opportunities, particularly in infrastructure, green finance, and sustainable development.Discussions also highlighted the EU’s €1.3 billion investment portfolio in Nigeria, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) engagement, and the Global Gateway Investment Strategy, which seeks to deepen Africa-Europe economic relations.Minister Edun welcomed these initiatives, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to macroeconomic stability, investor-friendly reforms, and digital transformation. He underscored ongoing reforms to improve the ease of doing business, a projected GDP growth of 4.6% by 2025, and a rising trade surplus as indicators of economic progress.Strategic projects, including the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and the National Single Window trade system, were also discussed, aligning with Nigeria’s fiscal consolidation and infrastructure modernization agenda.Both parties expressed optimism for future engagements, reaffirming their commitment to building a stronger, mutually beneficial economic partnership.
