The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially confirmed that it met the March 28 deadline to submit its expression of interest to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

While the submission marks a significant step forward, a formal bid can only proceed with the endorsement and backing of the Nigerian government.

Nigeria previously made a bid to host the 2014 edition of the Games but lost to Glasgow, Scotland.

In a statement issued by NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya, the committee emphasized that Nigeria’s bid, centered on Abuja as the host city, would serve as a powerful platform to showcase the country’s development strides, bolster its international profile, and revitalize its sports ecosystem.

“The experience gained from hosting the 2003 African Games in Abuja provides a strong foundation,” the statement noted. “It demonstrates Nigeria’s capacity to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure demands of a global multi-sport event.”

The NOC added that hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games would tell a compelling story of national progress and preparedness.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in Glasgow once again, from March 17 to March 29, 2026, after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host due to escalating costs.

Nigeria’s bid, if officially launched, could mark the first time the country hosts the Commonwealth Games and would position Abuja at the center of global sporting attention.
