Nigeria has entered advanced negotiations with Alphabet Inc.’s Google on the deployment of a new undersea fibre-optic cable designed to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure and strengthen internet resilience.

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, disclosed the development, noting that the discussions form part of broader efforts to improve connectivity, data capacity and reliability across Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

According to Inuwa, the proposed undersea cable would complement existing infrastructure, reduce the risk of network disruptions and support Nigeria’s growing demand for digital services. He explained that improved subsea connectivity is critical for economic growth, innovation, cybersecurity and the delivery of digital public services.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to position Nigeria as a leading digital hub in Africa, attract technology investments and support sectors such as fintech, e-commerce, education and cloud computing.

If finalised, the collaboration with Google is expected to significantly expand bandwidth capacity, improve internet speeds and enhance redundancy, ensuring more stable connectivity for businesses, government institutions and millions of users nationwide.

Discussions are said to be progressing steadily, with both parties exploring technical, regulatory and investment frameworks required to deliver the project.
