The Federal Government has unveiled a National Livestock Master Plan (N-LMP) to transform the sector over the next 15 years.
The plan, developed by the Ministry of Livestock Development and L-PRES with support from ILRI and global partners, targets improved productivity, food security, and job creation.
Key priorities include expanding feed and pasture production, upgrading breeding systems, boosting vaccination coverage, and strengthening market access. The plan also emphasizes gender inclusion, youth employment, and private sector participation.
Currently, livestock contributes about 17% of agricultural GDP and 5% of total GDP. With the new roadmap, the sector’s value is projected to rise to $74–90 billion by 2035.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, described the initiative as a turning point for Nigeria’s food and economic future.
