Nigeria has intensified its bid to secure a permanent seat with veto-wielding authority in the United Nations Security Council for Africa, emphasizing that comprehensive reform of the global governance system is long overdue.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also called on the European Union to collaborate with African partners in co-creating peace and security initiatives, anchored on African-led frameworks, to achieve sustainable stability across the continent.

The call was made on Monday during the first plenary session on Peace, Security, Governance and Multilateralism at the 7th African Union European Union Summit in Luanda, Angola. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu highlighted that over 250,000 Boko Haram affiliated individuals had surrendered in early 2025 as a result of the Nigerian Government’s combined kinetic and non-kinetic measures.

The President stressed that ongoing challenges including armed conflict, illicit weapons, climate pressures, irregular migration and political instability require stronger international cooperation and a renewed focus on African-led solutions.
