Nigeria has been ranked as the fifth-best English-speaking country in Africa in the 2025 English Proficiency Index released by global education organisation, Education First (EF).

The ranking assesses countries based on adult English language skills, drawing from standardized test results taken by millions of participants worldwide. Nigeria’s placement highlights the country’s strong performance relative to many African peers, reflecting the widespread use of English in education, business, governance and media.

Education analysts note that Nigeria’s long-standing adoption of English as its official language, alongside its role in academia, technology, entertainment and international trade, continues to strengthen overall proficiency levels despite challenges within the education sector.

The EF English Proficiency Index is widely regarded as a global benchmark for measuring English language competence and is often used by policymakers, educators and employers to evaluate workforce readiness and global competitiveness.

Nigeria’s position in the top five reinforces its status as one of Africa’s leading English-speaking hubs and underscores the country’s continued relevance in global communication and commerce.
