President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s election to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the 2026–2027 biennium, describing it as a strong endorsement of the country’s growing maritime influence and constructive role in global shipping governance.

The re-election into Category C of the IMO Council took place during the organisation’s General Assembly in London on Friday, November 28, marking Nigeria’s return after a 14-year absence. Tinubu noted that the achievement reflects the international community’s confidence in Nigeria’s commitment to maritime safety, security, environmental stewardship, and adherence to rules-based operations at sea.

The President commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, the ministry’s staff, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and Nigeria’s diplomatic team for their professionalism, strategic engagement, and dedication during the election process.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s new mandate on the IMO Council aligns with his administration’s agenda to unlock the full potential of the blue economy, expand maritime infrastructure, strengthen anti-piracy efforts, and bolster the nation’s position as a regional shipping hub.

Assuring the global maritime community of Nigeria’s readiness to partner for safer seas, cleaner oceans, and more efficient maritime transport, President Tinubu pledged that the country will continue to champion cooperation, innovation, and fairness in international maritime regulation. He thanked member states for their support and goodwill, promising to justify their trust through active leadership and contributions to global maritime objectives.
