Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has reiterated the country’s steadfast commitment to fostering strong diplomatic ties with France, dispelling speculations about a potential rift between the two nations.

In an interview with Arise News on Wednesday, Tuggar outlined Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities while addressing regional and international concerns. He emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to its constitutionally enshrined foreign policy principles, which include promoting national interests, African unity, and international partnerships.

“Nigeria has no intention of cutting ties with France or any of our longstanding international partners,” Tuggar said, highlighting France’s critical role in areas such as security, trade, and cultural exchange. He cited ongoing collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts as evidence of the enduring strength of their bilateral relationship.

Tuggar dismissed concerns that recent geopolitical changes in West Africa and within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) reflect hostility toward France. Instead, he framed these shifts as opportunities to redefine relationships with international partners based on mutual respect and shared objectives.

“Our foreign policy is about building bridges, not burning them,” he added, urging stakeholders to view Nigeria’s global engagements as constructive and cooperative.

Tuggar addressed several pressing issues, including Nigeria’s ambassadorial appointments, which he assured are the prerogative of the presidency. He clarified that the nation’s 109 diplomatic missions remain functional under the management of diplomats of various ranks. He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ECOWAS despite challenges posed by some member states withdrawing, stating that efforts are focused on resolving underlying issues to ensure regional stability.

On Nigeria’s advocacy for United Nations reform, Tuggar reiterated the country’s push for Africa to secure two permanent seats on the UN Security Council, reflecting its leadership in the call for equitable global representation.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s role as a regional leader, Tuggar emphasized the importance of promoting democracy, constitutional governance, and partnerships that safeguard freedoms and advance shared goals.

“Our approach is one of dialogue and collaboration, not confrontation,” he concluded, underscoring Nigeria’s role as a constructive and influential player in international diplomacy.

Through these remarks, Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to global peace, regional stability, and mutually beneficial partnerships.
